[...] I admit that I’ve only skimmed over some of the many reviews/accounts of Mozza and the Nancy Silverton/Mario Batali/Joseph Bastianich partnership… I like to know about recommended dishes b/c I have a habit of ordering the obscurely dreadful if left to my own devices, but I don’t want to know too much before I go. Aside from enjoying flavors, I like surprises. Frankly, when I went to the French Laundry last year, I felt like I was in a movie that I’d already seen because I’d pored over the cookbook, made a few dishes, and read a lot about it. There were still surprises during that wonderful meal, but it really is like movies — if you read too many reviews beforehand, the movie itself feels redundant. The real fun is reading reviews after the experience, to compare notes with others. [...]

[...] I feel like this should be the French Laundry-style post of my Paris trip — a visit to Pierre Herme inspires so many thoughts it seems only natural to want to talk about it in every detail. Pierre Herme was my favorite pastry shop in Paris. I went there twice, and in my more greedy moments, I wonder why we didn’t make a pilgrimage everyday… so perfect was Pierre Herme. Here’s a short bio of the man himself. [...]

Wow, what an incredible experience. Thanks for sharing!

Sometimes I feel the same way going to uber fancy highly-rated restaurants, expecting so much and scared to be disappointed, but I'm glad it wasn't the case for you and TFL.

I can't wait to finally go myself.

Helen - Thank you. So did I. :)

Jen - Thank you. :) In the back of my mind, I was a little afraid of being disappointed based on various things that I'd read, so not only was I happy that I liked our meal, I was also a little relieved. :)

I also really enjoyed hearing your account, and I'm glad you enjoyed it so much! I've read a few reports of people who ate there and were disappointed, although based on my own experience (I ate there once, a year and a half ago) it's hard to imagine.

I'd love to go back someday...until then, your excellent description will have to tide me over!
